Wire was obtained from wire used around the camp which I might add wasn't coated with varnish. He writes:įour nails were bound together with cloth from our clothes. Richard Lucas, who was a POW in Vietnam, built a radio in camp and was also able to improvise an earphone. Where did they get the earphone?įound this interesting tidbit concerning the headphone: Post by: WA1GFZ on February 28, 2009, 12:53:51 PMīut I have always had one question. Title: Re: FoxHole Radio or How Not to wind a Coil.:-) A lo-Z telephone ear piece would appear as practically a dead short directly across the output of a crystal detector. Also, before widespread use of the internet, they had the Minitel, which was like a small computer monitor screen that replaced the paper directory, and it worked a lot like surfing the web.Ī never took a French phone apart to find out, but I wonder how they got around the low impedance of the earpiece, unless they used a much higher impedance than ours. Last time I was there, about 9 years ago, everyone in the street had a mobile phone stuck in their ear, even more so than we do here, now. But now they probably have one of the most advanced phone systems in the world. Every other phrase in a conversation was "ne quittez pas" (don't hang up) because the line would go intermittently dead. I always thought that was a great idea and wondered why out telephones didn't have those too.Īt that time the French phone system had a reputation of being one of the worst in the world. It could be used to let a 3rd party listen in to the conversation, of if the line connection was lousy (as it usually was), or the room was noisy, that earpiece could be used on the other ear, so you could hear the conversation with both ears like wearing headphones. The cradle sets had a separate little "écouteur" that hung on the back of the telephone. ![]()
